Acoustic Roundneck Resonator Guitar with Mahogany Top, Sides, and Neck; Padauk Fingerboard; and Eastern European Hand-spun Biscuit Cone - 2-color Sunburst

User reviews

This guitar does NOT have the Fishman Nashville resophonic pickup. The ad should be changed. I purchased it here because it said it does. Also the guitar was not set up. This is a BIG issue since a complete setup on a resophonic guitar can cost as much as $150. The string slots in the nut were cut too low, especially the 1st string, making it impossible to use a slide without buzzing. There was a paint run on the headstock, the intonation was way off due to the cone/biscuit being misaligned, slight scratches on the resonator cover where it appeared someone had played it with metal finger picks, and one of the screws holding the tailpiece was completely stripped out. Finally, the truss rod was completely loose and rattling. It appears the vendor doesn't care about its customers. I suspect they had a floor model no one would buy because of the playability issue, and tried to shove it off on a mail-order customer - and it worked, this time anyway. I started to send it back, but since I am somewhat adept as a guitar tech I fixed it myself, except for the scratches and paint run.Summary - this could be a nice guitar for the price, but had factory problems and the vendor didn't care. If you decide on this guitar, get it from a place where that has the skills to set it up properly. I mean this. The instrument was nearly unplayable. This is an update. While further setting up the guitar I discovered the biscuit was held to the cone with a wood screw that was meant to be counter sunk, having an inverted cone shaped head. To stop it from going through the delicate cone they used a washer. It also was too long and went into the maple bridge. I hate to think this was from the factory, but strongly suspect it was. I replaced it with a proper wood screw of the correct length. If Gretsch is going to import guitars from China, they need to up their QA checks., BTW My guitar box was marked as being from Music Zoo in NYC.
The guitar arrived in undamaged packaging. I was actually amazed at how well it was cocooned. A fitted styrofoam guitar case is secured within the outer packaging with a ton of paper. They took great care in making sure it wouldn’t bounce around in there. As for the guitar itself, I’m very impressed. I am a guitar player who is recently taking an interest in lap steel, which is predominantly why I bought this guitar. A square neck guitar would normally be better suited to this purpose, but I wanted to keep the option to play standard Spanish style on the table. I have to say, it doesn’t disappoint. It’s very comfortable to play whether you’re playing standard, or lap. If you want to play standard, tighten the truss rod until it’s comfortable. (Don’t crank it too hard) When you start to feel decent resistance, stop, and back off a little. Otherwise you’ll break it, and I don’t think that’s covered in the warranty!! If you want to play lap, loosen the truss rod. You should have no trouble with regard to hitting the frets, especially if you tune to open G. Between the loose truss rod, and the string tension on the neck, there’s plenty of action to spare. If you still want higher action, Grover makes a nut extender for around $5 that you can slip on easily enough. All in all, this is a great buy. It came in great shape. No intonation problems, no damage of any kind. Just like any guitar I own, it took me a bout an hour to get it comfortable to my play style, and I was good to go!! As far as low priced, biscuit bridge resonators are concerned, this takes the cake. There are a lot of low cost spider bridge guitars out there that are good enough, but if you ask me, a biscuit bridge gives that metallic street blues sound I’m going for. There is no gloss finish on the guitar which is fine, I knew that going in. It actually may contribute to the warm sound it produces, balancing out the metallic resonance. I was worried there would be problems in shipping, or packing. There were none at all. It’s a delicate instrument, and it’s been handled delicately. I would absolutely recommend this guitar, as well as Chicago Music Exchange.
whats not to like ? a beautiful looking and sounding parlor sized resonator guitar !also very affordable .
